Maritza Abreu

I wrote the following during a trip to Santa Fe with Maritza in 2019:

“Friendships. I have amazing friends, and some I’ve known my whole life. Then you meet someone on your journey who you can’t imagine having lived without. Maritza is one of those people. This is a rare note from me, as I feel some things are just too personal. But Maritza is an exceptional friend. Don’t let her soft demeanor fool you—her wit is quick and voluminous. She gets me, and likes me anyway!”

While in Santa Fe, my mom was with us, and we started calling each other the Otero Sisters—named after the street we were staying on. Aloysious Otero will miss you dearly, but I look forward to more adventures!

Originally from Florida, Maritza—the “Adorable One,” as she called herself—lived in many places as part of a military family, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Colorado. She loved each place she called home.

She had two beloved dogs: Mindy, who was found as a puppy while Maritza was hiking and soon found her forever home with her; and Darby, equally loved, whose name was one of the first words her son spoke.

On a trip to Ireland, I posted a photo of a street sign in Gaelic. Maritza’s response was pure her—funny, quick, and tinged with warmth. That was Maritza: a friend who could turn any small thing into something to laugh about and cherish.

Her response to the sign? She wrote, "I might be a little rusty on my Gaelic, but I think it means....'This one time at band camp...'

An amazing wife, mother and friend. She left too soon. We had hilarious road trips together and she could make me laugh like none other. I was so fortunate that she and her husband moved in next to me in Colorado Springs. I was deeply saddened when they had to move to Alaska for a military assignment, but the good news is they returned to Colorado Springs! Maritza had a very dry sense of humor and could completely take people off guard. One day she simply asked me what my middle initial "A" stood for. I made something up, and she said "you look like an Aloysius to me." The name stuck. She was deeply spiritual and sensitive. She loved her family and animals, and I'll always hear her giggle in my head, usually followed by "Oh Gail!"
