Take What You Need and Leave the Rest: A Spiritualist Approach to the Paranormal

There’s a phrase that has echoed through Spiritualism for generations:“Take what you need and leave the rest.”
It’s simple, but it’s powerful. Not everyone will experience the same thing in a haunted space. Not everyone will hear the same voice, or feel the same shift in the air. Some people leave with goosebumps, others leave with a deeper curiosity, and some simply leave with a good story to tell.
And that’s okay.
For me, this phrase has always meant freedom. Freedom to experience without judgment. Freedom to open the door, walk into the unknown, and decide for yourself what to carry forward.
When we host investigations and tours with In The Shadows, this principle is always present. Some guests are looking for thrills, some are searching for answers, and others simply want to stand in a space layered with history. Each person receives something different, and each of those experiences is valid.
Because the truth is, history doesn’t just live in books. It lingers in the air, in the walls, in the spaces where people once laughed, suffered, hoped, and prayed. And sometimes, if you’re listening, it answers back.
So whether you come with an open heart, a skeptical mind, or a healthy mix of both — the invitation is the same: take what you need and leave the rest.
👻 Upcoming Event: Join us on Sunday, Sept. 28, at
Outlaws and Law Men Jail Museum in Cripple Creek, as we step into the haunted past of Cripple Creek. Whether you walk away with chills, curiosity, or comfort, you’ll walk away with something.
