Haunted History: Keys.

What Does a Key Really Open?

In Part 1 of Haunted History Monday, I shared the completely true story of a key that appeared inside my mother’s slipper.

Neither of us recognized it. We couldn’t determine where it came from, and it opened nothing we could find.

That is the entire story as we know it. No exaggeration. No explanation.

But it raises another question: Why does an unexplained key feel so much more mysterious than any other unidentified object?

Perhaps it's because a key is never supposed to exist by itself. Every key suggests that somewhere, there is a lock—and something on the other side of it.

For thousands of years, keys have represented far more than access to a house or a locked box. They have symbolized trust, authority, protection, secret knowledge and passage from one place to another.

To give someone a key is to grant permission.

To take one away is to deny access.

To hold the only key is to possess power.

And an old key whose lock cannot be found seems to carry a mystery of its own.

My key may have a perfectly ordinary explanation. It may once have opened something equally ordinary. But we never found the lock, and we still cannot explain how it came to be inside that slipper.

So I kept it. It reallly is the key you see.

In Part 2, we’ll look beyond the locks on our doors and explore why keys became connected with thresholds, protection, the dead—and doors that may not be entirely physical.

Because sometimes the most intriguing question isn’t where a key came from.

It’s what someone believed it could open.
